Tips For Applying Fake Lashes

Application

  • Before you start to apply, measure the length of the false lash to make sure it fits your eye shape. This will avoid the corner drooping or worse, the end poking into your eye. If the strip needs be shortened, cut the outer edge completely off with small nail scissors.

  • Take both edges of the false lash and bend them in to create a C shape and hold for a couple of seconds. That's the best way to take out the straightness and ensure it molds to our curved eye shape and stays put without the corners lifting up. Just this alone will make the rest of the process effortless.

  • Apply a high quality glue such as Duolash for long lasting results, not the glue that comes with the pack! If you have a steady hand, you can squeeze straight from the tube onto the strip. Or an easier trick is to put glue on a cotton swab or a toothpick and glide it across the lash strip. Make sure to be generous at both the inner and outer corner so the glue won't unstick when you blink.

  • Wait 10 seconds or so for the glue to become more tactile and sticky before placing onto your own lash line. Try blowing on the glue or gently wave the lash around in the air to speed this up. This is the best way to keep the strip from slipping around while you're trying to line it up properly.

  • Apply the lash to the base of your natural lash line on top of your actual lashes, not on the eyelid at all. The glue dries clear so don't worry if it gets messy.

  • Apply mascara last so you can integrate the natural lashes with the false ones, making sure they mesh into each other.

  • If you see a gap showing on the eyelid skin between your own lashes and the false ones, don't pull off the strip and start again. You can just fill in the gap with either black liquid liner or eyeshadow to hide it.

REMOVAL
  • Always remove false lashes before taking off rest of your eye makeup. First pre-soften the glue with a cotton swab that's been soaked in an oily makeup remover. Use a dabbing motion along the lash line. This loosens the glue up and breaks down the strength and stickiness. While your eyes are open, take hold of the false lashes at tips of the outer corner. Then close your eyes and slowly, slowly peel them away from your own lashes, working from outer to inner corner—towards the nose.
Q & A

Are the cheaper lashes just as good as more expensive brands?
  • Generally, no. The very very cheap ones can rip easily when you're taking them out of the packet and the hair strands can bend in the wrong places. Or sometimes they don't bend along the band which will make the corners lift off. Totally frustrating. And another main difference between cheap and expensive is the quality of the hair. Expensive ones are made from real hair and sometimes it's the fancy, unique design you're paying extra for. Plus, if you are careful when removing them, you can re-use them a few times and get more value this way. With cheaper brands, you may not be able to use the lashes more than once.
Can wearing false lashes damage your real eyelashes in any way?
  • No, false lashes and appropriate glues don't have any damaging risks. But rough removal of lashes will run the risk of pulling your own hairs out.
Is it okay to wear them at the beach or while you're swimming?
  • It's totally fine to wear false lashes to the beach. Being in water up to your shoulders is okay, but actually putting your head underwater is not ideal. Water can loosen the glue's adhesive. If I have sticky residue when I am applying a strip, I actually use a tiny bit of water on a cotton swab to un-stick the glue.

A Deep Conditioner That Wont Weigh Your Hair Down.

Julia Grace Salon Stylist, Mary Ann Rast, chose Pureology's HYDAWHIP for her favorite product this summer. Hyrawhip is a lightweight deep conditioner that replenishes fine hair while keeping color vibrant. It restores suppleness without weighing hair down. While it conditions and enhances shine the anti-fade complex helps maximize color retention. Ingredients include avocado, jojoba and mango butters. (Mango butters also found in Mirabella Lip Sheers sold at Julia Grace Salon leaving your lips moisturized and beautifully colored!) This is a great product for at home care. After using Hydrawhip a couple times a week you will see the condition of your hair improve immensely!

HYDAWHIP is for light/fine hair. Pureology also carries HYDRACURE which is a similar deep conditioning treatment made for Medium/Thick hair.
Both are sold at Julia Grace Salon

Which Bright Lip Is Best For You?

Bright lips were rampant on the runway this season, but how do you choose which shade is right for you? We take a look at the most popular brights; pink, orange and red on celebrities that rocked them and show you which tone is best for your skin color. Because nothing beats a bright lip for a burst of summer color!
PINK

A neon bright pink can seem like a daunting color, but it actually works beautifully with cooler toned pale to medium complexions and lighter hair as opposed to a deep tan.

Here, Gwen Stefani's cheeks are lightly bronzed, and her dark smoky eye plays off against her matte pink lip.

Our Recommendation: Mirabella Lipstick in CHARMED (sold at Julia Grace Salon)

ORANGE

A matte orange is best suited to warmer skin tones or those with a natural tan. The orange hue brings out the warmer tones in the skin, which Miranda Kerr has highlighted with a slight sweep of coral blush on the apples of her cheeks. Keep the focus on your lips with simple eye makeup. Just a sweep of mascara and eyeliner is all you need.

Our Recommendation: Mirabella Lipstick in PIXIE (sold at Julia Grace Salon)

RED

Red lipstick works on all skin tones, but this deeper shade with a blue undertone is best suited to pale complexions, especially if you have dark hair. The shade plays off the blue undertones of the skin without looking too brash. The trick as seen here on Rose Byrne is to wear little to no blush.

Our Recommendation: Mirabella Lipstick in CAUGHT RED HANDED (sold at Julia Grace Salon)

Make Your Brows Better In Minutes!

Brows are the most important feature on our face. They serve as a communication tool and if shaped correctly, brows can balance our facial features. To achieve the correct brow shape, a few key points need to be identified: the shape of the face and the hair growth pattern of the brows (some grow upward while grow downward):

How To Proper Eyebrow Placement

  1. Beginning point of brow Hold a brow pencil or brush vertically from the inner corner of eye up toward the eyebrow. This is where the eyebrow should start.

  2. The arch The brow arch or highest point of a brow shape should directly be above the outer rim of the iris. The arch is usually 2/3 of the length of the eyebrow.

  3. Brow ending point Hold a brow pencil or brush diagonally at the base of the nose to the outer corner of the eye and extend it past the brow. The end point is where the ruler intersects with the brow. This prevents brows from appearing too long or short.

Eyebrow Fillers

  1. Brow pencils If you already have defined eyebrows or only need to fill in small gaps of missing hair, pencil is the way to go. Anastasia suggests using light and subtle strokes for a natural look. If you draw too hard, your eyebrows will look too harsh and drawn in.

  2. Brow powder To softly enhance eyebrows, choose a powder shade that's lighter than your hair color. "Powders are great to fill in sparse brows that need definition and shape," says Anastasia. Dip a firm, slanted angle brush in the powder and use light, short strokes to fill in brows. To blend the powder into your brows, brush the hairs with spoolie or a clean mascara brush. Seal in the color with a clear brow gel.

  3. Brow pens Liquid pens are not as scary as you think. If you use soft and feathery strokes, you can fill in your eyebrows naturally. Another great thing is that the color is smudge-proof, so you won't run the risk of your brows disappearing by lunch.

  4. Brow gels Tinted or clear brow gel will help shape eyebrows without adding intense definition. "Gels hold your brows in place all day without flaking or drying down too hard," Anastasia says. If you sleep on your face, you might wake up with your eyebrows out of whack. A brow gel will help tame and keep them in place. These brow gels have a lightweight gel texture and are either clear or pigmented. You can use the brow gel alone (just swipe and go) or use after you apply brow pencils or powders to set them.

Picture Examples

*TIP: Unless you like bold eyebrows, always start with a small amount of brow product. It's easier to add more color than it is to take off.

Julia Grace stylists attend Sassoon Academy Class

Monday, May 16th 2011

Stylists of Julia Grace Salon attended an advanced cutting & coloring class put on by the professionals of the Sassoon Academy. At Sassoon the teaching and learning philosophy is developed in the form of a pyramid. Beginning with the abc courses where stylists learn the understanding of the dynamics of hair through the Sassoon proprietary methods; abc cutting and coloring hair the Sassoon way. Stylists were taught new methods to control and craft hair, understand how shape and balance works, and how to accentuate skin tone and enhance the bone structure in the face.

The goal of this course was to redefine boundaries and explore the possibilities of hair design. Learning the basic rules and then adding our own creativity is what makes these classes worth while. We look forward to using new techniques learned on our clients and hope they are as excited about it as we are!

The Hairline Optimizer lets the user apply the fibers close to the natural hairline avoiding the appearance of straight lines while preventing fibers from falling onto the forehead.
Users may find that the Spray Applicator offers a more precise and uniform application than simply shaking the bottle. It may also help cover larger areas more easily.

Tips For Choosing The Right Flat Iron

  1. First, consider power and heat. If your flat iron lacks either, you're going to regret buying your new hair tool sooner rather than later. Temperature is vital when it comes to using a flat iron to straighten wavy hair. It's even more important when it comes to super curly hair. The curlier your hair the higher the temperature you may need to get smooth results. Therefore, we recommend a flat iron with a variable heat setting between 140 F (for fine hair or touch ups) and upwards of 410 F (for thick hair or quick straightening).

  2. Make sure the flat iron's plates are ceramic. They heat up better and more evenly for smoother, healthier looking hair without hot spots that cause heat damage.

  3. For those with super stubborn hair, try splurging on a flat iron that has both ceramic and tourmaline technology. The added tourmaline will emit negative ions which leave hair super silky and soft.

  4. If you have short hair, be sure to buy a straightening iron with slimmer plates for more precise styling. Plates ranging from ½ to 1 inch will make it easier to capture smaller sections of short hair. Alternately, those with longer hair should purchase a flat iron with plates between 1 3/8 to 2 inches wide so you can straighten larger sections of hair at a time. This will cut down on styling time.

  5. Weight is another factor to consider. For those with short hair, your straightening time will likely be shorter. Therefore, a heavier iron will not be a burden. If you have long hair or especially long and thick hair, however, you'll want to purchase the lightest iron possible to cut down on wrist and arm strain. Look for a model around 1 ½ lbs.

High Brow

If the eyes are the window to the soul, then the brows are the welcome mat. This season, bigger, bolder arches like those worn by red carpet regulars Penelope Cruz and Diane Kruger are garnering all the attention. A growth-stimulating serum like LiLash, which strengthens and conditions brows, can help women achieve fuller brows, but the shape is equally important, They tend to weight the eye down if they're too heavy and not arched properly. Finally, we recommend using a brow powder or pencil to fill in the hair for a more dramatic look.
